The Suleymaniye Mosque, located near the Byzantine fortress, was built by order of Sultan Aladdin Keykubat the First in 1231. However, the building did not last long enough. In the 16th century, the mosque was rebuilt by Sultan Suleiman the Legislator.
Stone was used in the construction of the building. For good acoustics, 15 small balls were suspended under the dome of the mosque. The gates and windows of the mosque were made of wood and decorated with carvings.
The Suleymaniye complex also includes military buildings, schools and a palace. All these structures are located in the middle of the monastery.
