The Egyptian obelisk also has one more name - – obelisk of Theodosius. It was brought from the city of Luxor in 390 AD by the order of Emperor Theodosius I. The creation of this obelisk dates back to the 16th century BC.
The obelisk was installed on a special marble pedestal. The pedestal was decorated with images of various scenes in which the emperor took part. The installation of the Egyptian obelisk was also depicted on the pedestal. The Egyptian obelisk was created from Aswan granite of a white-pink hue. It contains Egyptian hieroglyphs and images of Pharaoh Thutmose III and the god Amun Ra.
The original Egyptian obelisk was reduced in connection with transportation to Constantinople. Together with the pedestal on which it is installed, its height is about 19 meters.
