The Binbirdirek Cistern was built in the 4th century by order of one of the Senate Filoxenos. The area occupied by the tank is about 3   700 square meters. The capacity of the Binbirdirek cistern is 325   000 cubic meters.

This underground reservoir is the second largest in the country after the Yerebatan cistern. The Binbirdirek cistern is located between the Beyazit and Sultanahmet quarters, under the Lavza palace. It has 224 columns, in each of the sixteen rows – 14 columns, the height of each column is 12 meters.

The marble bands of the columns of the first tier are fastened to the second tier. On all the columns you can see the signatures of the craftsmen who created these supports. In the 16th century, after the collapse of the palace over the cistern, it was used as a workshop space.

Currently, it is a museum, which has recently undergone restoration work. The Binbirdirek cistern hosts various cultural programs, concerts, exhibitions and receptions.
