The Yerebatan Cistern, which was completed in the 6th century, is the largest of the underground reservoirs in Istanbul. In ancient times, water came here through the Valens aqueduct from the Belgrade forests, located 19 kilometers from Constantinople.

The Yerebatan Cistern is located next to the Hagia Sophia Museum (Hagia Sophia).

Displacement cistern is 80   000 cubic meters. The length of the reservoir   140 meters, and width – 70 meters. It was actively used for its intended purpose until the 16th century. During the construction of this underground reservoir, columns were brought from different temples in the country. The total number of columns – 336.
