The fortress is located a little to the north of the Bebek area, not far from two bridges over the Bosphorus, built in its narrowest part. The Rumeli Hisary fortress was erected in 1452 in 4 months and 16 days. The citadel covers an area of over 30 000 square meters and includes 3 large and 13 small towers, interconnected by walls, the height of which reaches 10 meters. In ancient times, the citadel housed a garrison of janissaries who protected the coast from threats from the sea. Later, a customs checkpoint was organized in the fortress. The fortress was badly damaged twice. Having lost its defensive significance, the fortress was converted into a prison. The first time it suffered serious destruction during the earthquake in 1509, and the second time, the fortress was damaged during a significant fire in 1746. From 1953 to 1958, restoration work was carried out in the fortress. In 1960, an artillery museum and a summer theater were opened in the Rumeli Hisary citadel. There is also a park and an amphitheater inside, where concerts are periodically held. Topic: Rumeli Hisary Fortress (Rumeli Fortress) in Turkey, Istanbul resort. |
