Tourism

The hand lies almost on the border of the Arctic Circle. For this he received the title of Golden Gate of Lapland. The resort was opened for tourists in 1954.

The resort was planned according to the Alpine principle: there are 18 lifts to transport athletes to the slopes, 4 of them are chair type. A unified lift system operates at three ski centers: Ruka, Salla and Pyha. Transport links have been established between them. The distance between the centers is from 75 to 160 km.

The ski area is divided into two parts: Ruka-West and Ruka-Vostok. They are equipped with 29 slalom slopes and 360 km of cross-country tracks (41 km of which are illuminated at night). The longest slope has a length of 1300 km, vertical drop - 201 m.

The western zone of the resort is intended for professionals, as the tracks here are distinguished by difficult terrain and steep inclines. Ruka-Vostok will appeal to beginners and tourists with an average skill level. The slopes in this part of the resort are calmer and longer. On the other hand, the Pessari and Saarua area is characterized by difficult and long slopes with sharp elevation changes. Some of them are covered with forest.

The ski season in Ruka starts earlier than in other resorts in Finland. This is due to the presence of snow cannons installed on the tops of the mountains - they create an even snow cover. In addition to the ski slopes, there are trails designed for cross-country skiing and for kids riding.

For snowboarders Ruka has three halfpipes, as well as jumps, rails and boardercross tracks. The highlight of the resort is the freestyle center, the track length of which is 225 meters, and the height difference is 106 meters.

Among the entertainment activities among tourists are popular: snowmobiling, reindeer or dog sledding.

Lovers of hikers will have a hike along the"bear" trail, 75 km long. The final destination of this trip is Oulanka Canyon, which is located in a local nature reserve.

Ruka Ski School is open for beginners in Ruka. in which the best masters of skiing in Finland work. They will help you master downhill and cross-country skiing, telemark or snowboarding.

You can also have a good rest in the RukaKlubi sports center. Tennis courts have been opened on its base, badminton, squash, billiards, mini-golf and table tennis courts have been equipped. Here you can also visit saunas and jacuzzis, solarium, gym and massage room. Bars, restaurants, supermarkets and a children's playroom are open for you.

The main attraction of the resort is its nature. The hills of Ruka, Valtavaara and Pihavaara are striking in their beauty. The Hand has a height of about 500 meters, and the main sports competitions (biathlon, freestyle, slalom) are held on its territory. At the top of Pihavaara (46 m) there used to be a Sami sanctuary. Now in its place rises a hill completely devoid of vegetation. Walking along this hill is possible only with a special pass, the park is located in a conservation area. The forester's hut, which stands at the top of the Valtavaara fell (490 m), serves as a haven for tired travelers.

The national Olanka Park is worth noting. Its area is 270 sq. km. Here you will see rare representatives of the local flora and fauna.
