The first monument, located at the very entrance to ancient Thebes, is the colossi of Memnon. These colossi   are giant monolithic statues standing on both sides of the road that used to lead to the memorial temple of Amenhotep III. Now it is completely destroyed and the only reminder of it are these huge colossi.

The height of these statues – 16.6 meters. They are carved from solid quartzite rocks that were brought here from another place.

Due to an earthquake in 27 BC. one of the colossi was partially destroyed. After this incident, every morning the colossus began to make strange sounds. Thanks to this, he gained immense popularity in the ancient world.

In the II century AD. the ruler Septimius Sever gave the order to repair the statue. After that, the colossus fell silent.

At the feet of the second statue is a small sculpture of the wife of Amenhotep III – Teii.
