The ensemble was erected by Kalown in 1284-1285 in the best Syrian traditions. The entire complex was built on the site where the Fatimid palace used to be located. Sultan Calaun was famous for starting as a simple slave bought out in the slave market. He was trained in the art of war, and thanks to this he made a brilliant career, subsequently seizing power and becoming the Sultan of Egypt. Kalown was in a hurry with the construction, therefore, although a huge number of prisoners and slaves worked here, his servants were often grabbed passers-by from the street and sent to work on the construction site.
