This building was originally a church. However, in the 10th century it was closed by the Caliph Hakim and then bought out by the Jewish community. A synagogue was set up there, which was named after the rabbi of Jerusalem. The Ben Erza Synagogue is famous because in the 19th century, during the renovation, they found a huge collection of documents created in the XI-XII centuries. It contains not only religious texts, but also a chronicle of Cairo.
