Rating: 8,0/10 (110 votes) This synagogue is located to the right of the Church of St. Barbara. The Ben Erza Synagogue is very similar in architecture to Coptic churches. This building was originally a church. However, in the 10th century it was closed by the Caliph Hakim and then bought out by the Jewish community. A synagogue was set up there, which was named after the rabbi of Jerusalem. The Ben Erza Synagogue is famous because in the 19th century, during the renovation, they found a huge collection of documents created in the XI-XII centuries. It contains not only religious texts, but also a chronicle of Cairo. The building was recently renovated.
