Today Olympion is the largest temple in Greece, built in the 4th-2nd centuries BC. The temple is located 500 meters from the Acropolis.

Legend has it that the temple was built on the site where the sanctuary of the forefather of the Greek people used to be – Deucalion.

The construction of the temple began in 515 BC, during the tyranny of Peisistratus. Athenian democracy was almost uninterested in the temple, and Themistokol even used parts of the building for a defensive wall.

In 175-164 BC. Antiochus the Fourth Epiphanes undertook to finish building the temple. In 84 BC. Roman dictator Sulla removed several carved capitals from the columns of the temple, which were later used for the construction of the Temple of Jupiter Capitoline.
