The Temple of Hephaestus is today one of the best preserved ancient temples in Athens. The temple is located in the northwestern part of the Athenian agora.

The building was built in 449-415 BC. The architect of the temple is still unknown, but according to historians, it was the same architect who built the temple of Ares on the Agora and the temple on Cape Sounion.

From the 7th to the middle of the 19th century, the temple served as the Orthodox Church of St. George ... Later, the building was declared a national monument.

After Greece gained independence, the temple housed the National Archaeological Museum.
