During archaeological excavations, which lasted from 1935 to 1954, an open courtyard was discovered here, surrounded on all sides by columns. The area of this courtyard was about 2 000 square meters. It was once part of the Great Imperial Palace of Constantinople. The mosaic museum arose on the territory where the excavations were carried out.
