The synagogue was originally called the Great Synagogue. or 'New'. In the 16th century, new synagogues began to be built in the city, connection, with which it received the name"Old-New Synagogue." The construction of the synagogue was carried out in 1270 in the Gothic style. In 1765, the synagogue tower was rebuilt in the Rococo style. In the same year, a reverse clock with Hebrew numerals was installed in its attic. And today, this clock is a favorite topic of writers and poets, as well as one of the main attractions for tourists. According to the orthodox custom, the places for women and men are located separately in the synagogue. An unusual feature of the synagogue – a large flag on the western column with the Star of David and the Jewish hat, which has been a symbol of the Prague Jewish community since the 15th century. The right to own flag was awarded to the community by Ferdinand II, for the services of Jews in defending Prague from the Swedes. According to legend, the body of the Golem is still kept in the attic of the synagogue, which was created by Rabbi Judas ben Bezalel. During the Second World War, a Nazi agent climbed into the attic and hit the Golem, after which he died. Soon the stairs leading to the attic were removed and the attic was closed to tourists.
