This strait is considered the narrowest intercontinental strait in the world. The depth of the Bosphorus varies from 33 to 80 meters. The Bosphorus means"cow ford", the name of the strait owes to the ancient Greek myth of Zeus and his beloved Io. To avoid conflicts over jealousy with his wife Hero, Zeus turned his beloved into a cow. Io threw herself into the waters of the strait, which received the name Bosphorus, that is,"cow ford."
