Among the 23 applications submitted, the first place was taken by Lars Sonka's project with the motto"Immortality". The architect at this time actively worked with raw granite, which adorns the facades of the cathedral. He combined elements of medieval Gothic and Finnish national romanticism, due to which the result is a picturesque and unusual exterior of the temple. The construction plan is also carefully thought out: the benches for the parishioners are placed so that the priest can be seen from every place, and the columns supporting the vaults do not obscure the altar. The project was completed in the winter of 1901, and construction began the following spring. The stone was brought to the construction site on barges, and the biggest boulders are on horses. Granite was processed in different ways: platbands, steps, portals, plinth and decorative elements were made of sawn blocks, and the walls were made of roughly chipped stone. The spire reaches a height of 64 meters, and the roof of the main volume and the spire is covered with tiles. The church received the status of Tampere Cathedral in connection with the establishment of the diocese in 1924. Today the temple is a striking landmark of the city and an example of Finnish national romanticism. The exterior of the cathedral is of particular interest to connoisseurs of architecture: doors, side portals and other elements are beautifully decorated using themes of Finnish romanticism: fern leaves, images of a flying owl, a snake and others. A stylized lamp hangs next to the church portal, there are also decorative inserts with the dates of the beginning and end of construction, the name of the architect. Of equal interest are the interiors designed by the Finnish Symbolist painters Hugo Simberg and Magnus Enckel. In particular, in the altar chapel there is a painting by M. Engel"Resurrection from the Dead and Ascension to Heaven", above which there is a stained-glass window by H. Simberg. The same artist decorated the vault of the church and created the fresco"Garland of Life", which runs along the entire perimeter of the cathedral, depicting a dozen boys carrying a garland of flowers. The boys symbolize the twelve apostles, their burden is the burden of life. The fresco on both sides ends with a forest that symbolizes the afterlife. On the western wall of the cathedral there is a fresco based on the famous work of H. Simberg"The Wounded Angel". On the east wall of the cathedral there is a fresco"The Garden of Death" Tampere Cathedral houses one of the finest organs in Finland. It was manufactured in Lahti and expanded in 1929.
