Opened in 1990, the museum today has more than a thousand Slavic, European and other icons of the 16th and 19th centuries. The Museum of Icons is located in the east of the Museum Embankment in a Baroque building. Previously, this building housed the headquarters of the Teutonic Order. The founder of the museum – Jorgen Schmidt, a Frankfurt doctor who collected a collection of icons during his travels in the USSR and other countries. Museum Director – Richard Zakharuk. Most of the collection is made up of Orthodox icons. The Museum of Icons hosts exhibitions of private collectors, various museums, in particular, the State Historical Museum.
