The museum was founded in 1869, at the same time as the Department of Classical Archeology at the Ludwig-Maximilian University. After World War II, the restoration of the badly damaged building by Ernst Bushor, Paul Homann-Wedeking and Paul Zanker. In addition to copies of sculptures, the museum contains the most important tools of archaeological research – photo library, in the fund of which there are more than one hundred thousand photographs. Since 1976, the museum has been located in the Administration building of the NSDAP, today it is housed in the House of Institutes of Culture in Munich, and since 1991 has been open to the public. The museum has collected over 1,800 copies. It is the fourth largest copy museum in Germany. The museum is located near the Konigsplatz square and, accordingly, two other Munich museums of antiquity — Glyptotek and the State Antique Collection. Along with many other museums, it belongs to the Areal of Art in Munich.
