State Antique Collection – one of the largest collections of ancient Roman, Greek and Etruscan art in Germany. The building, which houses the Antique collection, was built by order of the Bavarian king Ludwig I in 1838-1848   in the style of a Corinthian temple. The architect of the project was Georg Friedrich Zibland.
In 1815, a Greek forum was added to the building by Leo von Klenz. In the period from 1869 to 1872   years. here was the royal Antiquarium, and from 1898 to 1912   years. – exposition of the Munich Secession. Since 1919   g. the building of the Antique Collection housed the New State Gallery. During the Second World War, the building was badly damaged. It was restored and opened in 1967 as an Antique collection.
The collection was based on the collection of the Wittelsbachs. In 1831, Martin von Wagner, an agent of the king, bought a collection of ceramics found by archaeologists in the Etruscan city of Vulci. Later, works of art were acquired from the legacy of Lucien Bonaparte. Ludwig I also acquired a collection of gold items by Carolina Murat, bronze items from the Etruscans, and Greek terracotta from lower Italy. After the death of Ludwig I, his collection was combined with the collection of antiquity of the Wittelsbachs. later the collection was enriched with exhibits from private collections. Among them are antique ceramics, objects made of art glass and bronze, products from terracotta and gold. During the Second World War, the Etruscan pottery collection suffered the most.
