The size of the square is 40 by 30 meters. The construction of the square was planned back in 1828 when Karl Engel drew up a master plan for the development of the city after a large-scale fire. Engel suggested calling the square"Triangular", but this idea was not implemented. The small square is recognizable due to the beautiful old building of the city library with the magnificent Lviv fountain, donated to the city by the famous public figure Gustav Petrelius in 1924. In 2009-2010 the architectural ensemble of the square, including the Lviv fountain, was reconstructed. Half of the funds for the work were donated by the European Regional Development Fund.
