The collection of the Bode Gallery has 11 000 portraits created in various techniques. Among the gallery's many exhibits, the most valuable is the portrait of Chandos, created by an unknown artist and depicting, as it is believed, Shakespeare, self-portraits of eminent English artists - Hogarth, Reynolds and others; portraits of Thomas Cromwell and Richard III, sculptural images of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. Until 1969, the gallery had an important rule - not to buy or exhibit portraits of living people.
