The area of protected land is 25 thousand km & sup2; and covers a unique variety of natural ecosystems, including mangroves, swamps, lowlands, glaciers, rainforest, alpine meadows, and coastal areas. Lorenz National Park is almost entirely located at the junction of geological platforms, for this reason, the mountain building process in these places is not completely completed: the highest point of the park, and at the same time of the whole of Oceania, is a mountain called Punchak Jaya, whose height is 5029 meters.
