Lorenz is an Indonesian national park located in the province of Papua and is the largest in the whole of Southeast Asia. The area of protected land is 25 thousand km & sup2; and covers a unique variety of natural ecosystems, including mangroves, swamps, lowlands, glaciers, rainforest, alpine meadows, and coastal areas. Lorenz National Park is almost entirely located at the junction of geological platforms, for this reason, the mountain building process in these places is not completely completed: the highest point of the park, and at the same time of the whole of Oceania, is a mountain called Punchak Jaya, whose height is 5029 meters.

The first attempts to protect parts of the modern park were made back in 1919, during the Dutch colonization. After Indonesia gained independence, Lorenz began to expand rapidly, more and more lands were excluded from the lists of geological exploration and became protected. According to the latest UNESCO data, several organizations are currently conducting scientific and environmental activities in the park, the headquarters of the leading one is located in Wamena.

The fauna of one of the most famous national parks in Indonesia is represented by 630 bird species and 123 species of mammals, the rarest of which are the striped duck, the eagle parrot, the cassowary cassowary, as well as the forest cat, prochidna and wallaby. Interestingly, there are still many unexplored"white spots" on Lorenz's map that can serve as a potential source of new plants and animals previously unknown to science. For example, in 1995, the world learned about the existence of the dingiso tree kangaroo. In addition to amazing animals, Lorenz has been inhabited, and for 25 thousand years, no less amazing people: now the local aborigines are divided into eight tribes, the largest of which are Asmat, Dane, Sempan, Nduga and Amungme. The number of local residents is approaching ten thousand people, and the aborigines themselves"slightly" lagged behind modern civilization and are not much different from their ancestors who lived a thousand years ago. Outwardly, the natives of Papua look quite menacing, but they are farmers and gatherers, however, visiting tribes without special written permission is strictly prohibited (it is quite possible that representatives of one of them secretly nostalgic for their cannibalistic past). Precious paper allowing entry to Lorenz, can be obtained in the city of Jayapura.

Lorenz attracts many tourists every year, yearning for a truly extreme vacation and thrills: no cellular communication, no air conditioners in cars, only huge unexplored spaces and as beautiful as dangerous nature. It is worth noting that traveling in the Lorenz National Park “wildly” or alone is not only difficult, but also simply insane.
