The Whitworth Gallery was founded in 1889 by Robert Derbyshire, in 1958 the gallery was incorporated into the system of the University of Manchester, becoming one of its divisions. It is called, after the famous London gallery of modern art,"Tate North Gallery". It houses an extensive collection of watercolors and sculptures. A significant place is occupied by the collection of samples of textiles, due to the fact that the textile industry is the leading one in the city.
