The church was founded in the 6th century by Bertha of Kent and was used as a private chapel. In 1988, along with the Abbey of St. Augustine and Canterbury Cathedral, it was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List.
According to some sources, Berthe of Kent only restored an ancient temple, abandoned after the Romans left Britain. This is evidenced by the spoli (fragments of earlier buildings) used in the construction. The Gothic tower of the church was erected much later.
