The museum was originally housed in a building adjacent to Deepdale, the world's oldest continuously used football stadium. In 2003, the Football Museum, together with the University of Central Lancashire, established the International Football Institute to conduct historical, sociological and cultural research. Many eminent sports personalities, such as FIFA President Sepp Blatter, have argued that the National Football Museum is a real gem, the best football museum imaginable. In 2005, the museum received the title of"Great Landmark of the Year".
In 2009, the museum was relocated to the Urbis Exhibition Center in Manchester due to financial difficulties, which was closed in winter 2010 due to preparations for the forthcoming opening of the new National Football Museum in summer 2011. The renovated museum opened in Manchester in the summer of 2012.
Most of the museum's exhibits are leased to various events and exhibitions throughout the UK, Portugal, Germany, Belgium and Sweden. In addition, the museum is a partner of UEFA, the result of their collaboration is the UEFA Anniversary Exhibition, the first exhibition dedicated to women's football. The museum also organized an interesting exhibition"Saved for the Nation: A History of the FA Cup", showing the oldest FA Cup trophy. Temporary exhibitions are also held here, for example, photo exhibitions timed to coincide with any event. Among other things, the Football for All program was organized by the National Football Museum in Manchester to promote public recognition of the contribution of people with disabilities to football.
