ImageThe Douglas Horse Tram is a horse tram line in Douglas, the capital of the Isle of Man. It is part of the island's tram system. By the 21st century, there are only a few horse tram lines left in the world that act as public transport, one of them is the Douglas horse tram. The Douglas horse tram has been operating since 1876. It owes its appearance to Thomas Lightfoot, a civil engineer from Sheffield. He owned a horse tram until 1882, when it was sold to Isle of Man Tramways & Electric Power Co Ltd. After the company went bankrupt, the horse tram was owned by Douglas City Council. The Douglas horse tram operated from 1876 to the present, with the exception of the Second World War. Since 1927, the tram operates only in summer. The horse tram line runs along the sea promenade and stretches for 2.8 kilometers. The track width is 914 mm. All along the tram line is double-track, combined. The line's rolling stock includes 23 carriages and 45 horses. To facilitate the work of horses, the cars are equipped with rolling bearings. The cars are mostly open. But at least one carriage is closed, with an open imperial. Horses working on the Douglas horse tram, upon reaching retirement age, are sent to a kind of horse"nursing home." The horse tram is extremely popular with tourists. The tram stable acts as a museum, so anyone can visit the museum besides taking a tram ride. ImageImageImageImage
