The Luxy Wheel is a large water-lifting wheel also known as Lady Isabella. Built in 1854 in the village of Laxsey by local architect John Casement. It is still considered the largest in the world. The diameter of the wheel is about 22 meters, the circumference is 70 meters, and the width is almost 2 meters.
The Laxsey wheel was built in 1854 to pump water out of the mine. Received a second name - Lady Isabella - in honor of the wife of the then Governor Hope. The wheel used a pump from the Glen Moore site. More than 600 miners worked in the mine.
In 1965, the city authorities bought the site with the Laxi wheel. In 1989 the wheel was restored.
The Laxi wheel is popular with tourists; they visited it even when the mines were working. The wheel is also featured on the Isle of Man 5p coin.
