Church of St. Nicholas in Germany, Potsdam resort
Rating: 8,0/10 (1001 votes)  The name of the Church of St. Nicholas is the Evangelical Church in Potsdam, which is one of the unspoken symbols of the city. You can find the building on the square called the Old Market. The author of this rather monumental building is the well-known architect Karl Friedrich Schinkel, who built many of the unique architectural works of Potsdam. Another church once stood on the same place, but it burned down, and several dozen years the place was empty. The architects were ordered to build a temple similar to the Parisian Pantheon and London's St. Paul's Church. Church style – classic, built for several more years, in 1830 - 1837. 6 years later, in 1843, the construction of the dome began, which today is clearly visible from behind the roofs of other buildings. The total height of the church, including the dome, is 77 meters. The bombing raids at the end of World War II destroyed the church completely, but it was carefully rebuilt according to the original plans in 1981. The building was transferred to the ownership of the church. Today, at the top of the church, you can also visit an excellent observation deck.
