Rating: 8,2/10 (1094 votes) Blackpool Tower is the most recognizable building in the British city of Blackpool, its trademark.
The history of the tower dates back to 1889, when the then mayor of the city, John Bickerstaff, returned from the World's Fair, where he was impressed by the Eiffel Tower. He considered it necessary to create something similar in his city. So, from 1891 to 1894, the Blackpool Tower was created, almost an exact copy of the Eiffel Tower. It is designed so that if it suddenly collapses, it will fall into the sea. Unlike the original, this tower is not free-standing; in its closed base there is the building of the city circus. The total height of the tower is 158 meters. Very quickly, visiting the tower and climbing to its very top became a favorite attraction for locals and tourists.
The original metal structures of the tower were not painted, which led to corrosion over time. As a result, in the 20s of the XX century, fragments of the structure had to be replaced. Since that time, the tower has traditionally been covered with dark red paint, and only in 1977 it was painted with silver paint in honor of the “silver” anniversary of Queen Elizabeth II. In 1998, the floor of the tower's observation deck was made of glass. Despite the fact that glass about five centimeters thick was used, not all visitors to the tower risk walking on it. During the Second World War, the site was dismantled, and a radar was installed on the tower instead. The observation deck of the tower is located at a height of almost 116 meters, so that a picturesque view of the city and the embankment opens from there. There is also an upper observation deck,
At the base of the tower is the Ballroom, created in 1894. The hall is decorated with rare and expensive types of wood and is illuminated by magnificent crystal chandeliers. Various festivals and dance competitions are held here, in particular, the international junior ballroom dance festival.
Also at the base of the tower, between the four main pillars, is the Blackpool Circus building. The circus is one of the four unique circuses in the world, the arena of which can be lowered and replaced by a pool for performances on the water.
In addition, at the base of the tower there is an aquarium, which is now closed for large-scale long-term reconstruction.
To visit the amazing Blackpool Tower, you need to book your tickets in advance, because all of its sites are incredibly popular.
