The monastery was founded by Giovanni Tolomei in 1313 on a hill near Ashiano. The monastery got its name in honor of the Mount of Olives, located in Jerusalem. During the Middle Ages, the monastery was one of the main landowners of the Siena Republic. The construction of the monastery complex began from 1393 until 1526. The monastery buildings were built of bricks. A bell tower erected in the Gothic style rises above the monastery. The large cloister of the monastery is decorated with murals of Sodoma and Luca Signorelli, made on episodes from the life of St. Benedict.
