Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe in Berlin - a memorial erected in Berlin in memory of the victims of Nazism.
The idea of creating this the memorial complex was built back in 1988. The idea came from Leah Roche, a Berlin publicist who organized a special fund for the construction of the monument in 1989. Her project received publicity and support from many well-known figures in Germany, including the former German Chancellor, Willy Brandt.
Construction of the memorial, which was designed by the deconstructivist Peter Eisenmann, began in October 2001 of the year. Four years later, the memorial was opened.
The monument, located in the very center of the city, between the Brandenburg Gate and fragments of the bunker of the former leadership of Nazi Germany, is a huge field of gray slabs, of which there are a little less than three thousand. The memorial is very popular, about 3.5 million people have visited it in the year since its opening.
