Church of San Giovanni in Valle in Italy, resort of Verona

The church was erected in the 12th century on the site where the old basilica of the 8th century, built on the site of an early Christian cemetery. The basilica was completely destroyed by an earthquake in 1117. During the Second World War, the temple was seriously damaged, after which it was soon completely rebuilt. The basilica was built in Romanesque style from tuff. The facade of the building was decorated with a double-leafed window with a portico and a hand-made fresco by Stefano da Verona `` Madonna with Saints ''. The church is adjoined by a bell tower built in the 18th century. The outside of the main apse of the church is decorated with a frieze depicting a hunting scene. The temple has three naves. The naves are separated by a series of columns and pilasters. In the lower church, located under the main space of the cathedral, the stonework of a building dating from the 8th century has been preserved. The crypt of the basilica houses two Roman sarcophagi from the 4th century. In the 14th century, images of the apostles were added to the lids of the sarcophagi.
