Church of Jesus in Italy, Sicily resort
Rating: 8,4/10 (6073 votes)  The Church of Jesus is one of the most prominent Baroque churches in Sicily. In the middle of the 16th century, the monks of the Jesuit Order arrived on the island. In the same century, construction began on a basilica near Casa Professor. The author of the project of the temple was Giovanni Tristano. The temple originally had one nave with several side chapels and a main transept. At the beginning of the 17th century, the architect Natale Mazuccio added two side chapels to the main nave, removing partitions between the chapels. The solemn consecration of the temple took place in 1636. In the 18th century, the decoration of the temple was decorated with the bas-reliefs of Gioachino Vitaliano `` Adoration of the Magi '' and Blessing of the Shepherd. In one of the chapels, the fresco `` Adoration of the Magi '' works by Antonio Grano, painted in the 18th century. Also in the basilica there is a high relief `` Glory to Saint Luke '' works by Ignazio Marabitti. At the end of the 19th century, Salvatore di Pietro persuaded Paolo Boselli to make the temple a national monument. During the Second World War, the dome the church was hit by one of the bombs – part of the walls and frescoes in the altar part were collapsed. After the restoration work, the frescoes were completely restored. In 2009, the temple was inaugurated, the first mass was celebrated by Archbishop Paolo Romeo.
