The church is considered one of the outstanding examples of the Sicilian Baroque. The basilica got its name in honor of St. Joseph and the Teatin Order. The temple was built in the 17th century. The author of the project is Giacomo Bezio, a member of the Catholic Order of the Teatins. In the central part of the facade there is a niche with a sculpture by Kajetan Tienski. One of the characteristic features of the church is the huge dome, decorated with majolica. The tambour was designed by Giuseppe Mariani. The bell tower was designed by Paolo Amato. The interior of the temple has one nave and two parishes, separated by marble columns. The interior decoration is a superb Baroque piece by craftsmen Giuseppe Serpotta and Paolo Corso. The vault and nave of the transept are decorated with frescoes by Guglielmo Borremanz, Philippe Tancredi and Giuseppe Velazquez. During the Second World War, the frescoes were badly damaged, but were soon completely restored. One of the most important works of art in the temple is the Crucifix made of wood by the master Fra Umile. The crypt contains the remains of an ancient church.
