The city walls adjoined the mosque on both sides. When the Spaniards attacked Mahdia, the city walls were destroyed, the mosque was also very badly damaged, only the northern pediment remained from it. A temporary replacement was built in its place, which was soon demolished, as there was a threat of collapse. In 1965, the Grand Mosque was restored according to the original project. Now the mosque can only be accessed through a huge portal. In ancient times, only the Caliph and persons close to him could pass through this portal. A large arch in the shape of a horseshoe rises above the portal. The inner courtyard of the temple covers an area of 42 by 50 meters and is decorated with a colonnade on three sides. The main prayer hall has 9 aisles, while the central one, the widest one, leads to the mihrab.
