Medina of Sousse, Tunisia, resort of Sousse
Rating: 7,9/10 (1828 votes)  Medina of Sousse is considered one of the most interesting and largest medina in Tunisia and is included in the UNESCO World Heritage List. Medina of Sousse began to form in VII century. It is surrounded by a medieval wall, the height of which is 8 meters and the total length is 2.25 kilometers. Usually fortified old cities were built around the main mosque. But Sousse is an exception to the rule, since the mosque is not in the center of the medina, but in front of it. When you enter the territory of the old part of the city of Sousse you will be greeted by the Great Mosque, which was built in 851 year. Its distinctive feature was the absence of a minaret, but later it was completed. Next to it there is a fortress-monastery Ribat. Together with the mosque, they form a system of defensive structures that protected the sea harbor. On the territory of the medina there is another fortress - the Kasbah, with a thirty-meter Khalifa tower. In general, the historical part of the city of Sousse is small in size and it is easy to walk through it. It is a collection of narrow streets that look very neat. Half of the medina consists of covered markets, which were built in the Middle Ages, but still function excellently today. Often, traders in the markets actively harass tourists, but the deeper you go into residential areas, the less sellers activity.
