The catacombs are located on the western outskirts of the city of Sousse. They were discovered in 1885 and belong to the early Christian period. The Christian catacombs stretch for about 5 kilometers and include 240 intersecting underground galleries and about 15,000 graves.

All underground passages were laid in the III-IV centuries in soft rock. At the moment, three of the four main mines have been explored. The finds found here are on display in the museum. As a rule, niches in the rock were cut one above the other, and then bodies were laid in them, laid with tiles, or covered with marble panels.

Only 100 meters of underground tunnels are open to visit, which are fortified and do not threaten a collapse, but behind the iron bars one can see the underground passages going into darkness. The walls contain closed entrances leading to burials, and in several places there are glass partitions through which visitors can view the features of the burial.

The catacombs of Sousse are divided into three parts:
  • Catacombs of the Good Shepherd. Here is a copy of the image in marble, and the original is in the Archaeological Museum of Sousse.
  • Catacombs of the North.
  • Catacombs of Hermes.
