The Basilica of the Blessed Virgin Mary is one of the oldest Gothic temples in the world. The church is located not far from Trier Cathedral.

Construction of the church began in 1230 on the site where a completely dilapidated building from the time of Constantine the Great was located. Archbishop Theodoric von Wiede was in charge of the construction work. In 1242, after the archbishop ran out of funds for construction, work was suspended. Soon they were resumed again thanks to donations from the townspeople. Construction was completed already in 1260.

At the end of the 15th century, the tower of the church was crowned with a spire, which was destroyed in 1631 by a hurricane.

The members of the cathedral chapter used the church for the daily mass and also as a funeral church. Soon the temple was filled with gravestones. Most of the burials were made during the French Revolution.

In 1951, Liebfraunkirche was awarded the title of Basilica Minor. In 1986 the church was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List.
