The amphitheater was built in 100 AD. The main building material was limestone. The eastern part of the amphitheater was carved into a sheer cliff, while the western part was artificially raised. The amphitheater could accommodate up to 25 thousand spectators. In those days, gladiator fights were held in the arena.

In the 3rd century, the Amphitheater becomes part of the defensive wall of Trier. The north gate was the main city gate.
