Roman amphitheater – the oldest and largest monument in Arles. Created in the 1st century, the amphitheater is perfectly preserved. Once the oval-shaped amphitheater could accommodate about 21 thousand spectators, its length – 136 meters, and width – 107 meters. The seats for spectators were located in 34 rows, the facade is decorated with a double row of arches with 60 openings (each of them reaches three meters in width). Four arches with a width of almost five meters were used as an entrance to the amphitheater.

In the Middle Ages, defensive towers were added to the amphitheater, a number of arched passages were laid – the amphitheater became a fortress. Prosper Merimee, who was engaged in the restoration of the amphitheater, preserved these fortifications. Today the amphitheater is open to the public, and the towers offer stunning views of the city.
