Albrechtsburg Castle, located in the city of Meissen, is one of the most beautiful castles not only in Germany, but throughout Western Europe. The castle is a true late Gothic masterpiece. Albrechtsburg Castle is located on a high hill on the banks of the Elbe River.

The construction of the castle began in 1471 during the reign of Elector Ernest. The castle was built under the direction of the royal architect Arnold of Westphalia. Albrechtsburg became the first castle built as a residence for peaceful residence.

After the division of land holdings between the brothers Albrecht and Ernest, the castle went to the first. Duke George the Bearded, son of Albrecht, lived for some time in the castle, however, he soon moved his residence to a castle in the city of Dresden.

At the beginning of the 19th century, the first European manufactory was founded in the castle by King Augustus the Strong. In 1708, the physicist Ehrenfried Walter von Chirnhausen and the alchemist Johann Friedrich Bottger invented the porcelain formula, which became a huge scientific discovery that ended the Chinese monopoly.

Until 1863, Meissen porcelain was produced at Albrechtsburg Castle. Later the production was moved to the central part of Meissen.

At present, the castle houses a museum dedicated to the history of European porcelain. The museum exhibits are unique handmade works of art made of porcelain from the 18th century to our time. There are also items made specifically for King Augustus the Third and Empress Catherine the Great. In other halls of the castle you can observe historical wonders, bizarre figurines, valuable furniture and figures dressed in medieval clothes.

The cathedral of the Meissen bishopric is also worth noticing, located on the territory of the castle complex.
