In the 4th century, a basilica dedicated to St. Andrew was built on the site of the present sanctuary. According to legend, the church kept the icon of the Madonna and Child, which was the most revered in the city. Later the icon was lost, but in the 12th century it was found again. According to the legend, the icon was discovered by a blind boy, who miraculously recovered his sight after that. This event led to an active increase in the number of pilgrims, after which it was decided to expand the temple. The modern building was built in the 17th century under the leadership of Guarino Guarini – one of the best architects of the Baroque era. In XVIII century, the building was rebuilt by Filippo Juvarra, and in the 19th century – Carlo Ceppi. The church acquired its current neoclassical facade in 1860.
