Castle of Montjoffroy – one of the castles located in the Loire Valley. One of three castles that have retained their original decoration. The history of the castle dates back to 1676, when Erasmus Contad acquired the lands of Montjoffroy.

In 1772, Marshal Louis Georges Erasmus Contad, governor of Alsace, decided to restore the residence and complete construction. He wants to build a comfortable castle where you can meet your old age. The manor house was built in the shape of a horseshoe. The castle acquired its present appearance at the end of the 18th century.

Initially, the building had the shape of a horseshoe. Now in the structure of the castle there are two ancient towers, the wings of the chateau, a small chapel and a moat. The castle windows offer a picturesque view of the Loire River. The building has a high slate roof.

Despite the hard times – the castle survived the French Revolution and the Vendee rebellion, - many objects that carry the history of the chateau have survived. This, and not only the harmonious architectural ensemble, is the uniqueness of this castle – in his perseverance. These are paintings by Riggo, Druhe, Vanloo, Purbus the Younger, tapestries, furniture and household items. A distinctive feature of the castle is the presence of multiple underground secret passages, rooms, stairs and passages. The owner of the chateau had several mistresses, which gave him the idea to acquire such shelters.

The descendants of the Contada clan still live in the castle, despite the fact that the castle is open to tourists and is visited daily with excursions.
