The palace, the adjacent park and related structures were built by order of Karl-Theodor, Elector of Bavaria and Palatinate. Nicolas de Pigage was appointed as the landscape architect. The construction of the palace began in 1755 and lasted until 1770. In the north-west of the park there is an artificial pond, next to which you can observe a number of representative buildings – two side wings (`` cavalry houses '') and the main building of the palace. The palace housed the apartments of Karl-Theodor and his wife. The outbuildings housed the Elector's retinue. The kitchen located in the western wing with the palace was connected by an underground tunnel. To the south of the palace, you can see the `` greenhouses '', where tropical trees sheltered in winter. Park paths that decorated in the summer. It currently houses the district library and other institutions. Inside the park there is an artificial canal, which was partially filled up in the 19th century. In 2002, the restoration of the front and utility part of the park was completed. Today the buildings of Benrath Castle house the Museum of Natural History (west wing), Museum of European Park Art (East Wing). In summer, the palace hosts thematic and sightseeing tours.
