The Theater of Nations, or the State Theater of Nations, is located in Moscow, in Petrovsky lane. The brick building was built on the land of the Bakhrushin merchants. The Bakhrushins were famous patrons of art, they allocated land and fifty thousand rubles for the construction of the theater building. The author of the project was the architect Chichagov. The building was built in a very short time, in just 120 days. It was equipped with the most modern technical equipment.

The theater was opened in 1885. It was the largest private theater in Russia: the Russian Drama Theater, known as the Korsh Theater. The theater existed until the early thirties. It was closed in 1932. A branch of the Moscow Art Theater was opened in the building.

In 1987, a theater was reopened in the building, which was called the "Theater of Peoples' Friendship". It was supposed to unite the theater space of a huge country - the Soviet Union. Performances of republican theaters were to be held on the theater stage. He was supposed to organize tours of republican theaters throughout the country.

The theater received its current name "State Theater of Nations" in 1991. Today the artistic director of the theater is the People's Artist of Russia Yevgeny Mironov.

The Theater of Nations is an independent theatrical institute supported by the state. Talented creative personalities and whole groups are invited to carry out performances in the theater. The aim of the theater is to preserve the highest theatrical culture of the Russian stage and move along the path of modern development of theatrical art.

A variety of theaters have staged their performances at the Theater of Nations. "King Lear" - Tbilisi Theater. Rustaveli and director R. Sturua. "Uncle Vanya" - Lithuanian Youth Theater and director E. Nyakrosius. The Cherry Orchard - Brooklyn Academy of Music and directed by P. Brook. "The Game of Love and Chance" - Theater Nanterre - Amadier and director Jean - Pierre Vincent (France).

The Theater of Nations introduced Moscow audiences to many theaters from different parts of the world. On its stage there were performances by theaters from India and Germany, Cuba and Bulgaria, Poland and the Czech Republic, Yugoslavia and Romania, South Korea, the USA, Croatia, Macedonia, China, Great Britain and France.

The Theater of Nations initiated the Festival of Contemporary Dance (1993 and 1995). On its stage, Benefits of choreographers Boris Eifman, Evgeny Panfilov, Boris Myagkov took place. The opera stars have performed solo programs at the Theater of Nations. The theater hosted solo performances by such actors as Sergei Yursky, Boris Levinson, Alexander Filippenko, Rimma Bykov, Evgeny Simonov and others.

The theater's performances have repeatedly received prestigious theater awards: "Crystal Turandot" and "Golden Mask".
