Church of San Giorgio in Braida in Italy, resort of Verona
Rating: 8,0/10 (2709 votes)  The San Giorgio in Braida Temple is a Benedictine monastery located in Verona. The monastery was founded in the 11th century. In the first half of the 15th century the monastery was taken over by the Venetian brotherhood of St. George, during the same period the monastery complex was completely rebuilt. In the 16th century, the presbytery of the temple was rebuilt according to the project of the architect Sanmikeli – The Romanesque tower was dismantled and a dome with a rather high drum was erected in its place. According to the Sanmikeli project, the construction of the bell tower was also started, which remained unfinished. In the same century, a marble facade was created, decorated with statues of Saints Lawrence and George. Later, the canon's house was added to the church, designed by the architect Luigi Trezza. On the facade of the house, you can still see traces of bullets left on it during the battle between the Austrians and the French who fought on the Adige coast in 1805. The basilica has one nave. Today, the church houses hand-made frescoes of such famous painters as Jacopo Tintoretto, Francesco Caroto, Paolo Veronese.
