The city was settled gradually, and at first the French emigrants became its main inhabitants, who set the further direction of the city's development. Cienfuegos has become a major shopping center, and therefore the historic districts of the city were originally built up with shops of a variety of merchants: from fruit and sugar cane to coffee and branded tobacco products. Later, eclectic trends began to appear, and the city began to grow as a unique architectural project of the Caribbean. Since the 19th century, such architectural monuments as the Town Hall, the Ferrer Palace, a number of residential buildings, church schools, and a lyceum have been preserved here.
