In 1986, its historic center was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site as the former capital of Spain and a place where Moorish, Jewish and Christian cultures coexist. Many famous artists were born here, including El Greco. Under the Visigoths, Toledo was the capital of the Spanish State. Throughout its existence, the city was famous for the production of iron. When Philip II moved the royal court to Madrid in 1561 and the city fell into decay.
