Rating: 8,1/10 (200 votes)  The Opera di Santa Maria del Fiore Museum is one of the most interesting museums in the city. The museum was opened in May 1891. The museum is located behind the shrine of Santa Maria del Fiore in the palace that Brunelleschi and Donatello used as a workshop during the construction of the cathedral. The construction of the palace began in 1296 and was originally intended for the administration of the construction of the Temple of Santa Maria del Fiore. Nowadays, you can also observe art workshops in the museum. The original exposition of the museum consisted of works of art transported from the cathedral – sculptures `` Madonna and Child '', statues of Boniface the Eighth, created by Arnolfo di Cambio at the turn of the XIII – XIV centuries, as well as his sculptures for the first facade of the temple, which was altered by Duke Francesco in 1587. The choir was designed by Donatello and Luca della Robbia in the 1430s. The silver altar, decorated with scenes from the life of John the Baptist, was created by Michelozzo, Verrocchio, Pollaiolo and Kennini. Over time, the exposition of the museum was replenished with other original sculptural compositions – sculptural decorations of the Giotto bell tower by Lucca della Robbia, Andrea Pisano and others, as well as 16 statues from the third level of the bell tower by Maso di Banco, Donatello, Andrea Pisano and Nanni di Bartolo. Today in the museum you can also see: a wooden sculpture `` Mary Magdalene '' Donatello's work, unfinished sculpture Pieta works by Michelangelo, sculptural panels by Lorenzo Ghiberti, marble bas-reliefs by Baccio Bandinelli, Baptism of Christ Andrea Sansovino. In addition, the museum displays a large collection of wooden models of the dome of the cathedral, as well as church utensils and various relics.
