The remains of the building of the Embassy of Venice in Constantinople were used as building materials, which were presented by the Byzantine emperor Michael the Eighth Palaeologus as gratitude for helping in the struggle against the Latin Empire. The palace was originally intended to create a civil -the political center and separation from the clerical authorities. In 1262, after Gugliemo was sent into exile, the palace functioned as a prison. It was here that Marco Polo, as a prisoner, dictated memories of Rusticiano's travels. In the 15th century, the palazzo housed the San Giorgio bank, which is one of the oldest in Genoa. Nowadays, the palace houses the administration of the Genoese port.
