The Karl and Franz University of Graz was founded by Archduke Charles II in 1585. The university was controlled by the Catholic Church for a long period of time, and during the reign of Joseph II in 1782 it was closed, as the emperor wanted to gain control over all educational institutions. A little later, Joseph II transformed it into a lyceum, where medical personnel and servants were trained.

Franz II restored the status of the university in 1827, and the educational institution was named after the founder and emperor who restored the status University.

At this university, at one time, taught by well-known scientists with the Nobel Prize, for example, O. Levy, W. Franz Hess, and so on.

Today, the University of Graz, together with the Technical University of Graz, participates in the NAWI Graz project, in which most of the Faculty of Science and related faculties of the Technical University conduct joint teaching and research. In 2007, joint educational programs in the field of molecular biology and chemistry, soil science were implemented.
